If you ask ten travellers for their favourite Varanasi memory, nine will say the same thing: the boat at dawn.
The route
The classic ride starts near Assi Ghat in the south and drifts north past dozens of ghats — each with its own story — up to Manikarnika and back. From the water you see the whole city wake up at once: prayers, bathers, kites, bells.
How to do it well
- Go for a rowboat, not a noisy motorboat — the silence is the point.
- Agree on the price and duration before you sit down (around an hour is ideal).
- Carry a light shawl; the river breeze is cool even in summer.
- Float a diya as the sun rises. It's a small, beautiful ritual.
Watch the light hit the tall, faded palaces along the bank. Listen to the oar dipping in and out. This is the Varanasi people travel across the world to feel — and it costs less than a coffee back home.
Booking a verified boat in advance means a fair price and a guide who actually knows the river.
