The first time I stood in line for Kashi Vishwanath, I had no idea what I was doing. I had heard stories of long queues and pushing crowds, and I went in nervous. I came out feeling lighter than I had in years. With a little planning, your visit can feel the same.
When to go
The temple opens around 2:30 AM for Mangala aarti and closes near 11 PM. For a calm darshan, go very early (before 7 AM) or in the late afternoon lull. Avoid Mondays and Shivratri unless you genuinely enjoy big crowds — those days are spiritually special but extremely busy.
The corridor changed everything
The new Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor connects the temple straight to the Ganga. It is wide, clean and far easier to navigate than the old tangle of lanes. You can take a dip at the ghat and walk up to the temple in minutes.
Small things that help
- Phones, cameras and leather are not allowed inside — use the free lockers near the gates.
- Dress modestly; cover shoulders and knees.
- Skip-the-line and aarti tickets can be booked online in advance.
- Buy your flowers and prasad from the official counters.
Don't rush it. Stand for a moment after darshan. Whatever you believe, there is something about that spot — said to be one of the oldest living places of worship on earth — that quietly stays with you.
