Every evening, just after sunset, Dashashwamedh Ghat turns into theatre, temple and celebration all at once. Young priests in matching dhotis lift heavy brass lamps, conch shells sound, bells ring, and the smoke curls up over the Ganga while hundreds of people watch in silence and song.

When and where

The aarti starts around 6:45 PM in summer and a little earlier in winter, lasting about 45 minutes. Dashashwamedh is the grandest; Assi Ghat has a lovely, slightly calmer version too.

The best seat in the house

Honestly? A boat. Hire one an hour before and watch from the water as the whole ghat glows. If you prefer land, arrive by 6 PM to grab a step with a clear view, or one of the rooftop spots in nearby cafes.

You will leave with ash in the air, a tune in your head, and the strange, happy feeling that you witnessed something much older than yourself.
