Varanasi gives you a hundred photographs an hour: light through smoke, a sadhu's painted face, kites over the river, an old wooden door. But the best photographers here are also the most respectful ones.
For the best images
- Shoot the golden hours — dawn from a boat and the hour before the evening aarti.
- Climb up. Rooftop cafes give you the layered ghats from above.
- Look for small stories — hands, feet, flowers, reflections — not just wide shots.
The etiquette that matters
- Never photograph cremations at Manikarnika or Harishchandra. It's grief, not content.
- Ask before close portraits. A smile and a nod go a long way. If someone says no, smile and move on.
- Don't block prayers or rituals for a shot.
The photo is never worth more than a person's dignity. Shoot with your heart, not just your lens.
Do it kindly, and the city opens up to you in ways no zoom lens ever could.
